SQL query practice workbook
Twelve query tasks using one synthetic dataset. Practice filters, grouping, joins, missing values and subqueries, then compare ordered results with an answer key.
The team will confirm price, access and delivery before purchase.
Who it is for
Learners who understand SELECT and want practical reporting and interview exercises.
Attempt each task before looking at its answer. State the assumptions, predict the result and test one boundary case. A working answer is the start: explain why it behaves correctly and what you would change if the requirements changed.
This is a self-study resource. It is not an official exam, a qualification or a promise of employment. If you need guided classes, ask the team about the relevant course separately.
What is included
- 12 original query tasks
- SQLite setup script with synthetic data
- Working queries and expected result rows
- Review points for joins, counts and result ordering
Assess each task against its result, edge cases, explanation and readability. Record a mistake and retry the task later without opening the solution.
Try two free sample tasks
These tasks show the format and level of the full workbook. Read the prompt first; open the answer only after making your own attempt.
Use the same synthetic dataset as the free SQL lessons. Start with an empty SQLite database, then run setup.sql.
1. Build a merit shortlist
Return id and name for marks of at least 82. Order by mark descending, then ID ascending. Explain how equal marks are ordered.
Compare the answer and review points
SELECT id, name FROM students WHERE score >= 82 ORDER BY score DESC, id;Expected result
[[3,"Jaya"],[1,"Asha"],[5,"Neha"]]- Includes the exact boundary
- Resolves tied marks by ID
- Returns only requested columns
2. Find data-completion work
List ID and name for students without a recorded city. Order by ID. Do not treat NULL as a quoted city name.
Compare the answer and review points
SELECT id, name FROM students WHERE city IS NULL ORDER BY id;Expected result
[[4,"Kiran"]]- Uses IS NULL
- Does not replace the stored value
- Uses a deterministic ordering
